چکیده

Although non-industrial private forests (NIPF) provide significant habitat for a variety of species, limited information is available on how landowners would respond to the adoption of practices that promote biodiversity conservation on their lands. We examined NIPF landowner preferences for adopting four such practices-extending timber rotation age, extending riparian buffer strips, periodic prescribed burning, and invasive species control-through a survey of forestland owners in Florida. Employing an attributebased choice experiment technique, we analyzed how landowners’ willingness to enroll in various incentive programs are influenced by their socio-economic characteristics and by the program attributes. Results of the multinomial logit model indicate that landowners with higher income, education, and more years of forestland ownership are more willing to adopt the suggested forest practices. Besides providing valuable insights in designing optimum incentives to further wildlife habitat on NIPF lands, the results of this study also underline the need for enhanced education and outreach efforts on these practices for increasing landowner participation. Increasing participation in incentive programs for biodiversity conservation.

Engaging private landowners in conservation activities for imperiled species is critical to maintaining and enhancing biodiversity. Market-based approaches can incentivize conservation behaviors on private lands by shifting the benefit-cost ratio of engaging in activities that result in net conservation benefits for target species. In the United States and elsewhere, voluntary conservation agre...

Effects of preference heterogeneity among landowners on spatial conservation prioritization.

The participation of private landowners in conservation is crucial to efficient biodiversity conservation. This is especially the case in settings where the share of private ownership is large and the economic costs associated with land acquisition are high. We used probit regression analysis and historical participation data to examine the likelihood of participation of Danish forest owners in...

Wildlife Co-management in Kenya: An Empirical Analysis of Landowners’ Incentives for Participation

Collaborative management (in short co-management) has increasingly become important because it seeks to create negotiated agreements between state and local communities (other stakeholder groups may also be included) and, therefore, offers a possibility to overcome conflicts over natural resource exploitation. However, achieving successful co-management is confronted with many challenges, one o...

Diversity of incentives for private forest landowners: An assessment of programs in Indiana, USA

Many government and private programs provide incentives for non-industrial private forest (NIPF) owners. Due to the complexity of this web of programs, the incentives of the programs are unclear. We focus on four specific programs that represent different rule structures—a federal cost-share program, a state tax incentive program, a nationwide private stewardship program, and a local private co...

An Economic Analysis of Incentives for Carbon Sequestration on Non-Industrial Private Forests (NIPFs)

Executive Summary There is widespread recognition of the potential role forests can play in contributing to Green House Gas (GHG) reductions through carbon sequestration. Non-industrial private forests (NIPF) comprise a significant portion of forests in the U.S. (approximately 40%). Thus, it is crucial to assess the role that NIPF landowners can play in broader carbon sequestration efforts. Man...
